WHAT IS JESSUP?

The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition , founded in 1960 at Harvard, is the world’s most prestigious international law moot court competition, organized by the International Law Students Association (ILSA). This unique competition provides students with the opportunity to argue fictitious cases before an international court, developing advocacy skills and global legal knowledge. ILSA, the organization responsible for this iconic event, promotes the exchange of ideas and the practice of law among young talent.

Want to know how the competition works and how you can get involved? Read on to find out all the details about this challenging and enriching journey.

The Jessup season officially begins with the release of the “Jessup Problem” (usually in September), a fictional case that simulates a dispute between two fictitious countries before the International Court of Justice (ICJ). In English, teams must analyze the problem and prepare “Memorials,” written documents that outline their legal arguments. After submission, teams compete in the national oral rounds, presenting their defenses and charges in simulated court settings before a panel of expert judges. The top teams then advance to the international oral rounds, where they face competitors from around the world in a competitive and diverse environment.

Each stage is a unique opportunity to refine legal skills and demonstrate knowledge on the international stage.

 JESSUP
BRAZIL

The national qualifying stage of the Philip C. Jessup Moot Court Competition is where it all begins for many teams: this is where the best teams in Brazil are chosen to compete in the international phase.

In Brazil, the competition is organized by Jessup Brazil , which seeks to bring together students, judges and sponsors once a year in the National Rounds. Representing both sides in English before a panel of three volunteer judges (professors, lawyers, judges, diplomats, Brazilians and foreigners) acting as judges of the International Court of Justice, the teams compete 4 (four) times in the Preliminary Rounds , 2 (two) as Applicant and 2 (two) as Respondent . The best placed teams move on to the elimination rounds. The number of elimination rounds (round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and finals) depends on the number of teams that will be competing in the National Rounds that year. It is an unmissable opportunity for students to shine and connect with professionals in the field. For judges and sponsors, it is an opportunity to engage with future leaders in the industry, and for volunteers, it is the chance to participate in a prominent global event.

The winning team will lift the Brazil-Canada Friendship Cup, a trophy that symbolizes Jessup Brazil's partnership with the Canadian embassy.
